Just to live is a blessing. Just to be is holy

Just to live is a blessing. Just to be is holy

On behalf of friends, brothers and sisters, students, camp members, the Xavier community, and all who love Father Wichai — our beloved “Father Pae (พ่อ แป)” — I would like to offer these words. (At first, I intended to recall his “love at first sight” story during his time at Khon Kaen University, his experience working in the mines in Ranong, and even his favorite chameleon — but Father has already shared these stories in his homily.)

I could speak of Father Pae in beautiful and polished words. Yet today, I choose to speak truthfully. Father is a priest — a devoted servant of God. He may be stubborn at times, but he possesses a deeply compassionate and generous heart. He has always carried a passionate desire to serve God through serving others and society. He has chosen to stand alongside those who are forgotten and marginalized.

He has worked tirelessly with students in promoting justice and peace. He has supported ethnic minorities, tribal communities, and those on the margins of society. His commitment to human rights has made him a voice for the voiceless. He speaks on behalf of those who are afraid to speak for themselves. He is forthright and unwavering in his commitment to truth — direct and strong in voice, yet humble in spirit; gentle, yet never weak.

Throughout his life, Father has shown us that God’s true love is self-giving — offering oneself wholeheartedly in sincere service to others. He carries the heart of a fighter: fighting for peace, fighting for justice.

Over the past decade, Father and his team initiated the “Spiritual Journey” program, creating meaningful opportunities for spiritual growth. In the past two years, they have further established the Xavier Spiritual and Leadership Development Center (Xavier SLDC), nurturing both spirituality and leadership for future generations.

Father once reminded us that old age brings a treasury of wisdom — a lifetime of accumulated experiences, especially in the spiritual journey. Yet it can also bring loneliness. Today, however, we affirm that his later years will not be marked by loneliness, but by a rich treasury of wisdom and the enduring spirit of a fighter — a source of strength that continues to guide and inspire us.

On the occasion of his 50th anniversary in the Society of Jesus, 40 years of priesthood, and his 77th birthday, may the Blessed Mother Mary, Jesus Christ, and Saint Joseph bless him with joy, peace, serenity, and good health. May he always recognize his own value and continue to be our treasury of wisdom, guiding and caring for us for many years to come

Just to live is a blessing. Just to be is holy. With love and deep respect.                                                                                 Dr. Mariena Ketudat-Cairns
