The 46th Xavier Workcamp : Service and Community in Mea Ta Chang

Service, Community, and Encounter

From 18–30 December, the 46th Xavier Workcamp was held in Mea Ta Chang Village, an Akha community. More than twenty-five university students took part in the camp, working together to build a water tank for the villagers and to celebrate Christmas with them.

Organized annually, the Xavier Workcamp invites university students to step away from their busy academic lives and engage with the realities of the wider world. Through direct involvement in community service, the camp aims to foster a deeper sense of love, sharing, and commitment to service.

Mea Ta Chang Village is a small Akha village located outside the city in Chiang Rai Province, with no access to electricity or an internet connection. The community experiences recurring water shortages during the summer due to insufficient water storage, which led the Xavier Workcamp to select the village as the site for its annual project.

Upon arrival, participants were assigned to different host families and invited to live closely with the villagers. They shared everyday life with their hosts—sleeping in their homes, eating together, and communicating through daily interactions. This immersion allowed students to move beyond observation and truly experience the local way of life. Through these simple yet meaningful encounters, they learned about Akha culture, values, and traditions, and came to appreciate the village’s strong sense of community, mutual care, and hospitality.

What is more, it is undeniable that the success of the camp was made possible through the cooperation and generosity of the villagers themselves. Working side by side with them, we learned that meaningful service is never accomplished alone. With our hands strengthened by the hands of others, we discovered that when people come together in solidarity, even the most challenging tasks become possible. This shared effort not only enabled us to build the water tank, but also deepened our understanding of community, mutual support, and the true spirit of collaboration.

In the end, the Xavier Workcamp was more than a service project; it was a shared journey of learning and encounter. Through living and working alongside the villagers, participants came to understand the power of community, cooperation, and mutual support. The experience reminded us that true service is built on relationships and solidarity, and that when people come together with open hearts and willing hands, lasting and meaningful change becomes possible.
